Best Mattress for Motion Isolation

A good mattress will absorb motion well.

Memory foam and other soft materials are excellent for this.

These two materials are great for absorbing body movements, so you should look for those that contain them.

You should also be aware of the bounce back characteristics of each material.

For example, latex foam and innerspring coils are very bouncy, so they won’t absorb body movements.

In order to test their motion-isolation abilities, you should use a kettlebell test.

The person on the opposite side of the bed should feel no more than a gentle shift in weight when the weight is dropped.

If they feel more than that, that mattress isn’t the right choice for you.

ExportAz Mattress has tested and recommended 10 mattresses that are the most motion-isolating.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is ExportAZ Mattress?

ExportAZ Mattress is an independent, reader-supported mattress review website. We research and test mattresses, explain how materials and firmness affect sleep, and publish buying guides, comparisons and free sleep tools so you can choose the right bed with confidence.

How do you test mattresses?

We combine hands-on testing — firmness ratings, pressure relief in each sleep position, kettlebell and wine-glass motion-transfer tests, edge support and temperature checks — with analysis of manufacturer specifications, owner feedback, and a close read of trial, warranty and return policies.

Do brands pay for higher rankings?

No. Some links on ExportAZ are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide which products we recommend or how they are ranked. Read our affiliate disclosure for details.

Which mattress is best for couples?

Couples usually sleep best on a mattress with strong motion isolation and solid edge support, such as a memory foam bed or a hybrid with individually pocketed coils. If your firmness preferences differ, consider dual-sided or split-firmness designs.

How long should a mattress last?

Most quality mattresses last about 7–10 years. Latex often lasts longer, while low-density foam and budget innersprings may wear out sooner. Replace your mattress if it sags, you wake up sore, or you sleep better elsewhere.
